High School General Education Social Studies Teacher

The High School General Education Social Studies Teacher is a highly qualified, state-certified educator responsible for delivering engaging, standards-aligned social studies instruction in a virtual learning environment. The teacher supports students in developing historical understanding, civic knowledge, research, analytical, and critical-thinking skills while managing the instructional process, monitoring academic progress, and providing individualized guidance. This role collaborates with families, colleagues, and support teams to promote student engagement, achievement, and successful course completion. This is a full-time position requiring the ability to work independently for approximately 40 hours per week. A professional, distraction-free home office during the workday is required. Core hours are between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, while allowing for some flexibility as determined by school needs. Residency Requirement: Resident of Pennsylvania; residents of other states will be considered on a case by case basis. Salary will commensurate with experience.

Essential Functions:

• Takes ownership for student's academic progress and attendance, communicating high expectations and showing active interest in student's achievement
• Prepares students for high stakes standardized tests
• Conducts live synchronous teaching - minimum of 15 hours per week
• Asynchronously supports objectives, including composing/sending emails, planning course objectives, preparing learning plans, and using data to determine student needs
• Maintains a growth mindset around improvement and is open to coaching on a regular basis by administrators or instructional coaches
• Under guidance from principal, augments course content according to prescribed policies and procedures using appropriate asynchronous and synchronous tools
• Submits grades and required student work ensuring student academic honesty and integrity
• Maintains grade book; Makes placement and promotion decisions by generating formal and informal reports regarding student progress
• Identifies concerns and alerts administrators about student performance and progress
• Establishes and maintains positive rapport with families and regularly communicates with students and learning coaches/parents on an ongoing regular basis
• Provides support to learning coaches/parents with student curricular and instructional issues
• Supports students and learning coaches with the set-up and maintenance of their learning environment including basic computer troubleshooting
• Understands how both diverse and unique characteristics of students and their families impact required support
• Works collaboratively with other teachers to ensure that all students are successfully progressing through the program, that parents have a central point of contact, and that tasks are distributed among the stakeholders
• Responds to students, parents and colleagues in a timely manner

Minimum Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree AND Six (6) months of student teaching experience
• Equivalent combination of education and experience
• All PDE required clearances for school-based personnel

Minimum Required Skill Set:

• Great organizational and time management skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Adaptable technology skills
• Experience using search engines (internet) for research projects
• Experience using a student information system and/or other type of database
• Demonstrated competencies with general technology, Microsoft Office Platforms (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, etc.), Google Platforms, Zoom, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in a virtual environment
• 1-3 years of experience teaching in an online (virtual) and/or in a brick and mortar environment
• Experience with Class for Zoom or other programs for live virtual class meetings
• Experience with student assessments such as Exact Path, Study Island or AimsWeb
• Masters Degree and Level 2 Certification preferred

Certificates and Licenses:

• Appropriate PA state teaching certification for the grade level/subject content required.

Work Environment:

• This is a home-based position. When office days are required, the noise level in the office is usually moderate (computers, printers, light foot traffic).
• This position will include limited travel and will include limited overnight travel. This is estimated to be less than 20% of the time. Travel will be required for community events, PD and state testing.

Job Performance Requirements:

• Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
• Ability to exhibit mental dexterity to "dial" a telephone, to enter data into a computer, to read a computer screen and printed material, to hear and understand speech at normal office/workplace levels, and on the telephone, and to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in the workplace and on the telephone.
• Ability to physically lift up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret workplace documents, technical procedures, research studies, and governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports with clarity.
• Ability to interface diplomatically with all members of the school community - administrators, teachers, parents, students, Board members, support staff, colleagues, and outside professional contacts.
• Ability to coordinate and use technology for a variety of workplace purposes and communications.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
